Winfred Ray Sampley's Obituary
Winfred Ray Sampley, 59, of Memphis died Friday, April 29, 2022 in Childress.
Services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 3, 2022 in the First Baptist Church in Memphis with Rev. Daniel Downey, officiating. Burial will follow in Dodson Cemetery in Dodson.
Viewing will be held Monday, May 2, 2022 at the funeral home with family receiving friends for visitation from 5:00-7:00 PM.
Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Memphis.
Ray was born May 23rd, 1962 in Abernathy, TX to E.M. and Billie (McQueen) Sampley. Ray attended school in Lakeview and O'Donnell, TX. Graduated from O'Donnell High school in 1981. Ray had a strong work ethic from the time he could hold a hoe to work in the cotton fields along side his mother and siblings all the way till his illness forced him to stop in February 2022. During his high school years he worked in the cotton gins, a gas station and as a janitor while in the high school work program. Following his graduation in 1981,Ray moved here to Memphis, TX. He worked for Lancer mobile homes in Childress, the oil compress in Memphis, and in 1986 began working for Lloyd Elliott at his gas station.
In 1999 Ray opened Ray's Service Center and ran and operated it until his illness. Ray also enjoyed being a tow truck driver for Koetting Wrecker for many years.
Ray married Laura Johnston on June 20th, 2003 in Memphis,TX and accepted her daughter Kaeleigh as his own.
Ray was a people person, who loved helping people in all kinds of situations. Ray loved his family and their gatherings were always filled with laughter, love, great memories, and a little mischief. Ray enjoyed spending time with his daddy, E.M. who instilled amazing qualities in all his children.
Ray loved his grandsons and the time he spent with them was precious. Ray enjoyed their laughter. Ray loved fishing, camping, and 4 wheeling.
Ray was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents John and Ida Sampley. Maternal grandparents Hap and Cle McQueen. Father E.M. Sampley.
Survivors are wife Laura Sampley, daughter Kaeleigh Heath, Grandsons Johnny Heath, Lucas Couch, and Declan Johnston, Mother Billie Fleitman and husband Gene of Nocona, TX, Brother Edward Sampley and Janelle Lamb of Montague, TX, sister Trudie Altman and husband Terry of Memphis, TX and sister Janie Rogers and husband Bill of Roswell, NM, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Thank you to our wonderful town of Memphis and surrounding areas. Ray was so touched by every single act of kindness you gave him.
Special thanks to the Childress Hospice who were truly an answer to our prayers. Thank you to DR. Darter, DR. Pratt, Mandy, Lisa, and Carol, you all did an outstanding job helping navigate our journey through a very difficult time. Your care for Ray went above and beyond and we are truly grateful.
