Nelda Dukes' Obituary
Nelda Lyllis Latham Dukes of Wheeler, TX passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2024 in Wheeler at the age of 95 years, 3 months and 15 days. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 31, 2024 at Wheeler Area Church of Christ in Wheeler, with Shawn Zybach officiating, assisted by Brandon Dukes.
Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Wheeler. Viewing will be Thursday from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM at the funeral home.
Nelda was born February 14, 1929 to Thomas Jefferson and Lula May Brady Latham, in Woodson, Texas. She graduated from Woodson High School. She was the youngest of 9 siblings. She had a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ the Son of God and she was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.
Nelda married Joe Dukes on February 1, 1948 and became mother to Joe’s son, Roy. She and Joe were also blessed with a daughter, Beckey and two sons, Bevard and Garland. Nelda was an old-school wife and homemaker. She was constantly working in, and for, her home and family. She cooked and cleaned and canned food from the garden they grew. She kept an immaculate lawn and flowers around her home. She enjoyed fishing. Her husband, Joe, passed away on September 21, 1985, Nelda had been a widow for 38 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; her son, Roy; her grandson-in-law, John Paul Harris; great granddaughter, Skylar Harris; both her parents; all her brothers and sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Nelda is survived by her daughter, Beckey and husband, David, of Briscoe; son, Bevard and wife, Diane, of Briscoe; son, Garland and wife, Charlene of Allison; her grandchildren, Joe & Christy Willingham of Stratford OK, Shawn & Daphne Zybach of Briscoe, Jace & Deidre Henderson of Wheeler, Phillip & Andrea Henderson of Forney, TX, Britt & Carissa McCarter of Wheeler, Brandon & Keri Dukes of Wheeler and Matt & Bronwyn Huff of Allison; 17 great grandchildren, Alexis, Caylen, Brenton, Zane, Tysen, Shyana, Logan, Trevan, Todd, Tayton, Ethan, Breeley, Travis, Landry, Aliyah, Jack and Adalyn; 7 great-great grandchildren; Jayce, Lanie, Dean, Texie, Drew, Duke and Zealand; and four more great-great granddaughters due this summer!
