Marcia Joyce Cox Rives was born June 12, 1925, in Plano, Texas, to Dr. John M. and Helen Lea Short Cox. She passed away January 26, 2018, in Wheeler, Texas. Her family moved to Shamrock, Texas, in 1926, when Marcia was a year old. Marcia attended Shamrock Schools until she graduated from high school. She married E. M. “Curley” Rives in 1942. Shortly thereafter, Curley joined the Navy and trained for his ultimate service in the Marshall Islands during WWII.. Marcia followed Curley during his training to North Carolina and finally to San Francisco where he deployed to serve with the Seabees. For a young woman, traveling from coast to coast was quite an experience. Marcia held various jobs in California during the four years that Curley was serving in the Navy. After the war, in 1945, Curley and Marcia moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and later to Shamrock, Texas, in 1950 residing in the Twitty community to run the family farm. Marcia attended West Texas State University and later worked for Ashland Chemical Company for twenty-eight years. She attended First Baptist Church in Shamrock all of these years and was the director of the Medium Adult Sunday School Class for twenty-five years. She loved her church and the Lord. Many cookies left her kitchen destined for activities at the church.
Marcia was an avid fisherwoman, and she and Curley enjoyed fishing together for many years. She was also an avid reader who read the paper from cover to cover each day and was well versed in political and world events. She was an accomplished seamstress, making many of her clothes as well as for others in her family. Marcia dabbled in architecture, drawing house plans for friends if called upon to do so. Her skills at entertaining were unparalleled, and she loved cooking for others. Her home was always open to friends for fellowship and to play “88” dominoes.
In 2011, Marcia moved to Park Place Senior Living in Amarillo, Texas, where she made many new friends and continued to attend church and play “88”. She loved her new home.
Marcia is preceded in death by her husband, Curley, in 2007. She is survived by two sons; Billy Don Rives and wife, Diane, of Bertram, Texas; Doug Rives and wife, Betty of Wheeler, Texas.
