My childhood memories of Johnny and Tommy Rhodes when we were going to school at Lela will stay with me forever. I stayed at their home so often that Johnny’s Mother said that I was her third son. I have three memories out of many that I would like to share today.
Johnny’s dad made it clear to us boys not to ride his calves. That was the first thing we did as soon as he left for work. They would throw us off onto a wooden corral fence or the ground, hopefully on dry ground. We sure had a blast riding the calves.
JT had a small horse of some kind. All three of us would get on him bare back, lock our arms around each other, and the one on the back would bring up his heels into the flanks of the horse and he would crow hop sending us up in the air a few inches then coming down jarring our teeth, and we laughed and laughed.
At this time, we all had horses, and we went riding over to Billy George’s ranch to get Jetta George to ride with us. Things started out good then got bad quick. Jetta got her horse ready and started out ridding south then someone hollered Let’s Race! My horse was bringing up the rear when I saw Johnny’s horse flip over from back to front. Lots of dust was in the air. Johnny was laying flat on the ground. He set up once then fell flat again. Like a good friend that I was, I went to check Johnny’s horse first and she was ok. Johnny said he had a bad headache, so we got him back to the house and called his mother to come and get him. He had a concussion, but thankfully was soon on the mend. One good thing came out of that day. We found out later that Johnny’s horse was pregnant and would give birth a few months later.
Johnny, some of my best childhood memories I have were made with you and your Family.
RIP my Friend,
Bobby Riley
