Private Interment will be at Shamrock Cemetery in Shamrock, Texas.Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Shamrock.Helen Belle Palmer Laycock, 89, died March 19, 2014. She was born August 26, 1924 in Billings, Montana, to parents Charles T. and Katherine B. Palmer. The oil and gas industry brought the family to Shamrock, Texas in 1925. Helen graduated from Shamrock High School and West Texas State University in Canyon. She married Robert P. Laycock at the First Methodist Church in Shamrock, Texas on June 3, 1948, and they enjoyed 53 years together before his death in 2001. A beloved teacher in Shamrock for many years, Helen taught "commercial", and later, English, at Shamrock High School. She also taught in Lela, Kelton, Pampa, and Amarillo. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron, Shamrock Chapter. A faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Shamrock and later Marble Falls, she was active in the United Methodist Women and the Thursday Fine Arts Club. Helen was also an avid golfer. She and Robert retired to the Texas hill country in 1985, where she was a lifetime member of the Meadowlakes Golf Club and actively involved in the Meadowlakes Women's Golf Association. After suffering a massive stroke on the golf course in 2000, Helen was compassionately cared for at The Windchime in Kingsland, Texas. A true lady, she was forever gracious, despite her many challenges. Her humor and positive attitude remained strong to the end of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, and two sisters, Vyvyan Boddy and Dorothy McClure. Survivors include a son, R. Lynn Laycock, and daughter-in-law, Amy N. Laycock, of Seattle, Washington; granddaughter, Emily P. Laycock, of Tegucigalpa, Honduras; and granddaughter, Sarah E. Laycock, of Sewanee, Tennessee. The family gives their heartfelt thanks to all the caregivers at The Windchime and Texas Home Health Hospice. Remembrances may be made to First United Methodist Church in Shamrock, Texas.
