Carol Irene Lewis' Obituary
Carol Irene Lewis passed away peacefully on August 25, 2024 surrounded by her closest family. She is now resting in the arms of her Lord and Savior. Carol was born on April 10, 1945 in Dumas, TX at her family home. Growing up, Carol was active in the United Methodist Church and many youth service leagues. She graduated in 1963 from Dumas High School and went on to complete a B.S in Education at McMurry College in Abilene, TX. During her high school and college days, she excelled at playing the flute in the marching band.
In 1967, Carol married James “Jim” Tucker Stovall. Jim gave his life for our country in Vietnam in 1968. Shortly thereafter Carol gave birth to their son Tucker. The Stovall family remained Carol's loving family for the remainder of her life.
Carol began her elementary school teaching career in 1967 in Midland, TX. She later taught in Brownfield, Dumas, and Garland. While teaching in Dumas, she met the man who would stand by her for the rest of her life, Garth Lewis. They married on July 10, 1971 in Dumas. Garth became a loving father to Tucker, and the family welcomed Gary in 1973 and Andy in 1980.
After her teaching career, Carol took on numerous volunteer roles at her boys' schools. She also loved her retirement work at James Avery Jewelry. Her daughters in law and granddaughters still wear the special charms and
hand-picked pieces she chose for each person.
In 1997, Carol assumed her favorite role, becoming "Nana". She was blessed with seven grandchildren who adored her. The unanimous consensus amongst the grandchildren is that Nana made the best pancakes in the world and taught them all how Dr. Pepper is superior to drinking water.
She was deeply loved and cherished by her family, will be dearly missed, and her legacy will live on with them. Carol's husband Garth was quoted multiple times “over the last few years as Carol battled Alzheimer's she never lost her sweet disposition”. Nothing was truer said. Carol's kindness, consideration of others, and southern grace was second to none.
She was preceded in death by her parents Alton and Irene Sewell and her brother, Edward Lee. Carol is survived by her husband Glen Garth of 53 years; son James Tucker Stovall Jr. (Cheryl) of Frisco, TX and grandchildren Savannah, Sydnee, Colton, and Caleb ; son Gary Glen of Dallas; son Andrew Lee (Lindsay) of University Park, TX and grandchildren Brynn, Will, and Davis; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Carol is also survived by a very special sister-in-law, Patti Hanson of Katy, TX.
The burial will be held Wednesday, August 28 at the Church of the Nazarene in Dodson, TX with a 12:00 pm viewing and “indoor" graveside service. A small reception will follow. Carol's celebration of life will be on Thursday August 29th at 4 pm at Grace Avenue United Methodist church worship center at 3521 Main Street Frisco, TX 75054. Please come casual and if able, wearing pink, Carol's favorite color. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Dallas. www.alz.org in the name of Carol Lewis.
