Canda was born December 20, 1966 in Pampa, TX to Johnnie Carpenter and Cynthia Osborn Carpenter of McLean, TX. She grew up on the Carpenter Ranch north of McLean, and she attended school in McLean ISD. Canda was a member of the Gray Co. 4-H program and showed cattle, horses, swine and even once a sheep. She played basketball and ran track in Jr. High and High School. Canda was also a cheerleader. She was in the class of 1985, but took classes in Pampa at Amarillo College and graduated early.
In November of 1984, she married Craig Lee Morris of McLean and moved to Pampa. Craig joined the Navy in 1985 and Canda joined him in California after he completed basic training. On November 13, 1986, their son, Garrett, was born at the Alameda Naval Base Hospital. Although the marriage didn’t last, they remained friends. Canda then returned to the Amarillo area where she put Garrett in school and went to work.
In 1995, Canda met Steve Henry through a mutual friend and they began dating. They had a lot in common- riding motorcycles, good music, good food, and the love of God’s word. They married in May of 1998 and their daughter Samantha was born on November 14, 1999. She was a stay-at-home mom until 2001.
Canda went to work for Xcel Energy on January 22, 2001 as a customer service operator and slowly began climbing the ladder. She also went back to college and got her degree in business administration and attained the title of “Vice President of Customer Care.” She worked for Xcel for 25 years and 5 months.
She loved to travel, crafting, fishing, spending time with family, riding motorcycles, and spoiling her dogs, Onyx and Riggs. Canda’s greatest joy was her children and grandchildren. “Family first,” she would say.
Canda was a member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church in Amarillo, TX, and was known for her deviled eggs.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Milton and Maude Carpenter, and Aubrey and Lillian Osborn; and her aunt, Effie Lou Everett.
Survivors include her husband, Steve Henry; son, Garrett Morris; daughter, Samantha Henry; grandson, Rylan Morris; granddaughter, Lilly Morris; mother and step-father, Cindi and Ben Murray; father and step-mother, Johnnie and Mary Ann Carpenter; brother, John Cash Carpenter; cousin, Jenny Everett Fry; step-children, Angel Henry and Markisti Gilbreath; step-brother and sisters, Elson Rice, Jem Ann Freeman, and Shandee Tolleson; and step-grandchildren, Jamion Shaw, Nazyla Gilbreath, and DeMarion Gilbreath.
