William R. L. Roberts' Obituary
Services will be Monday, March 30, 2015 at 2:00 PM in Calvary Christian Fellowship, Shamrock, with Rev. Joe G. Jernigan and Mark Thomas, officiating.
INTERMENT- Shamrock Cemetery in Shamrock.
ARRANGEMENTS are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Shamrock.
William R. L. Roberts went to Heaven on Saturday, March 28, 2015. He was born August 30, 1923 in Reed, OK to Bill and Lillie Dale Long Roberts. He moved to Canadian and graduated from Canadian High School with the class of 1941. After graduation, he went to college at West Texas State in Canyon, TX. Because of a hearing loss, he was classified as 4-F and could not serve his country in WWI. When he and one other young man were the only two males left on campus, he left college.
R. L. moved to Shamrock in 1943 and went to work at White House LumberCo. He started his banking career in 1944 as a bookkeeper at Farmers & Merchants State Bank. He retired from banking in 1983 after working up to be CEO of the bank.
R. L. married Mary Eileen Phillips on June 1, `1952 at Samnorwood, TX. In his retirement years, he devoted himself to the teaching of God’s word at Calvary Christian Fellowship. He loved the study of the Bible and the lifelong friendships he formed through this. Even after he quit teaching at age 90, he enjoyed discussions of the Word.
R. L. served two different times as Mayor of Shamrock. He was chosen as Shamrock’s Man of the year in 1962. He was chairman of the Shamrock Public library Building Fund when the current library was constructed. He served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, Greenbelt Bankers Association, Shamrock Rotary Club and Shamrock Chapter of the American Red Cross.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and two nephews.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary, of the home, one daughter, Becky Brown of Shamrock, one nephew , Randy Day of Pampa and one niece, Shirley Allen of Taos, NM.
