William Wesley "Bill" Jones' Obituary
AMARILLO SERVICES- 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 12, 2009 in Robertson Funeral Directors Chapel of Memories in Clarendon. INTERMENT- Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon. Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon. Mr. Jones was born April 23, 1925 in Greenville, Texas to B. E. and Laurel Griffin Jones. He attended school in Lone Oak. He enlisted in the US Army. He volunteered for the Paratroopers and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division as a demolition expert. In September 1944 William was involved in Operation Market Garden, The allied airborne invasion of Holland. His unit, the 504th Parachute Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division, jumped into Nijmegan, Holland seeing heavy combat there. He was later severely wounded in combat during the Battle of the Bulge in Bastone, Belgium. William returned to state side, met and married Doris Mae Morton on October 12, 1945. They were married in Hollis, OK. William attended agriculture school in Clarendon, before they moved to Amarillo in 1951 and resided there ever since. William and Doris had 3 children. Upon retirement, William and Doris bought some lake front property at Lake Fork. That is where they spent the majority of their golden years, catching those “big” one and entertaining family and friends. He was a family man and will be missed by all who knew him. PRECEDED IN DEATH BY- his parents, B. E. Jones and Laurel Myers, his wife on June 17, 2006; 2 sons, Billy Frank Jones and Larry Don Jones; a great grandson, Ayddien Glenn William McCraw; a brother, Frank Jones; and a sister, Betty Griggs. SURVIVORS - a daughter, Linda Purcell and husband Neil of Amarillo; a daughter in law, Debbie Jones of Irving; 8 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren.
