Mr. Corbin was born November 14, 1923 in McLean to Merida Triplet and Lilly Ann Yopp Corbin and was a lifelong resident of McLean. Troy attended the county school at Liberty and graduated from McLean High School. After graduating high school, he attended a mechanics course at West Texas Teachers College {WTSU}. While there he helped build a college dorm that now has a memorial marker stating “built by student labor”. After completing the mechanics course he was a roofer at the new Amarillo Air Force Base and then at the Prisoners of War Camp in McLean. He entered the armed forces in January 1942 and served under General George Patton in the 782nd Tank Batallion as a tank driver. He drove a tank across France, Belgium, Germany, and Czechoslovakia liberating the people along the way. While in Domazlice, Czechoslovakia, the 782nd liberated a German slave concentration camp. Troy carried a picture of this for years to remind himself of the tragedy and how he was blessed. Upon his return to McLean after the war, he met the love of his life, Jerry Evans. They were married July 19, 1947 and had 62 wonderful years together. They were blessed with 3 boys. Troy worked at Warren-Gulf Petroleum for 37 years. After retirement, he and Jerry opened Shady Acres Campground and operated it from 1983 to 1993. Shady Acres had the only swimming pool for the kids in McLean. Troy became known as the pool and candy man. He knew every kid by name and he gave away more candy than he sold. Troy could never let any child go without. He took care of every kid in McLean.
