No memory that I have as I only saw “Butch” every 10 years or so. Of course I have known him for many years as our farms were on the same road. I liked him a lot and always have. Even though I was not a cowboy, he always treated me well. Always a big smile and hug or big handshake. Candidly I always felt a little sorry for him. Finding a niche in life life is not easy when you are one of a kind. God Bless you Butch and keep riding.
One day Buddy Cockrell and I went by Riley’s to look at some colts. I knocked on his back door. When he came to the door, he opened it up and said come on in, I have to get my boots on. While standing there I could see freshly braided halters and lead ropes he had been working on. I also saw some buckets with different colors of dye in them. As I looked at the red bucket I jokingly said,” Is this bucket red dye or human blood?” Riley said” It’s human blood from the last guys that came here to Jew me on a horse! We all died laughing.
Riley LOVED his horses. He could - and would - talk for hours about pedigrees and who all did what. He was a walking encyclopedia concerning Hancock horses, his personal favorites.
I worked for him back in the 70 and 80's at Canadian feedlot he tried running over us going down the alleys and made us move railroad ties 3 different times we got to calling him Godstreet. always had names for us .also worked in Glazier trading horses and riding them he had us to set some railroad ties building pens ground was so hard hard to dig dug about 2ft set the post and took chain saw cut off to height . Riley was one of a kind person. Hell of a Cowboy May he work God's cattle and horses in those big pastures..
