Born on July 3, 1953, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Suzanne was the daughter of Melvin and Jenelle (Reynolds) Brock. She spent her early years in Albuquerque, growing up in a loving home and attending Hoffmantown Baptist Church, where her deep faith and love for God were first nurtured. She graduated from Texas Tech University in 1975 with a degree in Home Economics and married Larry Hampton on August 7, 1976. Together, they built a beautiful life in Wheeler.
Suzanne began her teaching journey at Wheeler ISD, later spending three years at Kelton ISD before returning to Wheeler ISD, where she taught for the remainder of her career. She retired in 2008, after 31 years of dedicated service to Texas education, 28 of which were spent in Wheeler. Her dedication and passion for teaching left a lasting impact on her students and colleagues. Whether in the classroom, teaching Home Economics, or helping young people discover life skills, Suzanne nurtured her students with care and wisdom.
Suzanne was more than just a teacher; she was a mentor, a role model, and a cherished friend to many. Her passion for Home Economics extended well beyond the classroom, as she nurtured a love for cooking, sewing, and creative pursuits in both her students and friends. Suzanne was an avid quilter and a devoted member of a quilting group in Wheeler, where she formed close, lasting friendships. She also enjoyed many other forms of handwork and artistic projects. Known for her exceptional cooking, especially her baking, Suzanne was often regarded as the best pie maker in Wheeler.
A woman of deep faith, Suzanne was the embodiment of a Proverbs 31 woman—graceful, wise, and strong. She was known for her selflessness, her kindness, and her dedication to her family and community. Suzanne was an active member of First Baptist Church in Wheeler, where she shared her musical gifts as a pianist and choir member and touched many hearts as a Sunday School teacher. She was a devoted prayer warrior, holding herself accountable to lift up anyone who crossed her path in prayer.
To her family, Suzanne was more than a teacher and mentor—she was a wife, mother, and “Nana.” Her love for her family was boundless and unconditional. Suzanne’s quiet strength, deep love, and faith were the cornerstones of her life. She cherished every moment spent with her family, especially their trips to Red River, a tradition from her own childhood.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Women’s Oncology in Amarillo. They also want to extend their deep appreciation to the “Chemosabes,” the fellow patients who, along with the staff, offered the support and friendship that brought so much comfort and peace. Together, they all became an extended family during this challenging time.
Suzanne is preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Jenelle Brock, and her two brothers, Tim and Barry Brock. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 48 years, Larry James Hampton, along with their five children: Matthew Brock Hampton and his wife Tara of Oklahoma City, OK and their son, Cterling; Megan Jenae Henderson and her husband Hank of Lockney, TX and their children Brock, Bryna, and Bailey; Andrew James Hampton and his wife Kelli of Wheeler, TX and their children Braxton, Preston, and Cooper Jack; Jonathan Cole Hampton and his wife Megan of Wheeler, TX; and Michael Collin Hampton of Wheeler, TX. Suzanne will also be missed by many other loving relatives.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Wheeler ISD Student Council (1 Mustang Drive, Wheeler, TX 79096) or the Medical Center League House of Amarillo (7000 Amarillo Boulevard West, Amarillo, TX 79106 or at www.leaguehouse.org).
