Susan Carol Simmons Browning was born in the backseat of a car in Vernon, Texas on the way to the hospital on May 5, 1951 to John Warren and Sara Ann Simmons. She grew up in Vega Texas where she found joy in playing basketball and volleyball. Susan began driving at an early age and had her pilot's license at age 17. In Vega, she met the love of her life William Harold (Bill) Browning Jr.
They married on December 20, 1969. She graduated from West Texas A & M with a Bachelor of Science to become a biology teacher but soon learned that that was not her calling; however, she did teach many life, plant and kitchen skills and lessons all throughout her life. She made many "landscape technicians" by leading by example, giving orders and instructions, creating bonds with love and wisdom. While dating, when Bill and Susan were separated geographically, while Bill was attending college and working in Gainesville and St. Jo, TX, he wrote to her nearly every day; delivered to her by air mail, signed, "Bill B." They were devoted to each other from their 15th date to the end of his life October 4, 2015.
She was a paragon of perseverance in business in which she started "ShowString Embroidery" in 1986 in Frederick, OK as well as starting a new business, "Susan's Embroidery", when she was in her 60's, employing many friends and family over the years. Her business in the 90's and beyond resulted in traveling the United States leaving no stranger in her wake. Bill and Susan were friends to all. Many of their loved ones had the honor of traveling with them, making many wonderful memories along the way.
Susan loved to play games; she was labeled, "ruthless", "competitive" while playing dominoes and cards and "took no prisoners" while playing croquet with her grandchildren. She loved her weekly ritual of going out with her "Posse" to eat every Friday night in Amarillo, TX.
Susan was a force to be reckoned with as well as a natural born caretaker starting with her mother, brothers and sister, children, friends, and many others along her journey. Until just recently, Susan continued to make friends and advocate for others anywhere she lived and was well respected and loved from independent living in her Texas neighborhood to Assisted Living facility in Duncan, OK and then when her physical needs became more critical, in Long Term Care where she had just been named resident of the month. She led by example, giving orders and instructions and making bonds.
Susan is preceded in death by her husband Bill, her father John Warren, her mother Sara Ann, and her sister Dianna Jane.
Susan is survived by two brothers David Simmons and wife Tamara, Chris Simmons and wife Lynda, a sister, Dana Herrell and husband John, as well as her children, son, William Harold (Trace) Browning III and wife Cynthia, daughter Julie Suzanne Browning Stone, and son, John David Browning and wife Dina. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren, Brooke, Will, Levi David and wife Liberty, Kayla, Abby, Sasha, Jayson, Henry, Levi James and Gunnar; and one great grandchild, Keanu.
She will be remembered for her love for the Lord as well as loving friends as family. Susan would often say, "I love you more than you know". She will be missed by many! Susan also loved all things space and admired the moon. It makes us happy that she is walking among the stars.
