Shurley Jean Nicholson was born September 28, 1936 in Carter, Oklahoma, the only child of Ralph A. and G. Helen Nicholson. She attended high school at Carter High School, in Carter Oklahoma, where she was an avid basketball player. She married Sam Walker on November 11, 1953. After Sam’s release from the Army, they resided in Shamrock where they raised three children. Shurley worked at C.R. Anthony’s in Shamrock. After her father’s death, Shurley and Sam raised cattle on her father’s property in Oklahoma. Her husband, Sam, passed away on February 2, 2005. Shurley later married Lawrence Overcast April 25, 2008 and moved to Canute Oklahoma. Shurley moved to Austin, Texas in 2010 and later Katy, Texas in 2011 as she struggled with Alzheimer’s disease.
Shurley was a member of the Eleventh Street Baptist Church in Shamrock for many years. She enjoyed square dancing and playing volleyball in her younger years. She also enjoyed camping at Lake Altus, fishing, vacations in Colorado, spending time with friends, and taking in stray dogs and cats. She was warm and kind, greeted everyone with a smile, and was loved by many.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Sam.
Survivors include her husband Lawrence Overcast of Claude, Texas; her three children: son Jerry Don Walker and wife Karen of Cleburne, Texas; son Michael Joe Walker and wife Connie of Lufkin, Texas; and daughter Tami Walker and fiancé Sam Gowdy of Katy, Texas. She has four grandchildren – Erin Walker, daughter of Jerry and Karen; Darryl and Rachel Walker, children of Michael and Connie; and Kimberly Rogers, daughter of Tami.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in memory of Shurley Walker Overcast be made to Eleventh Street Baptist Church; Humane Society of the US; or the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
