I first met Dr. Gerner in December of '79 and helped take care of the many patients he had over the years, here in Vail. He was one of the most caring physicians I have ever met. He would sometimes spend the night at the hospital if he was worried about a particular patient. If not, you could be guarenteed a phone call in the middle of the night to check on his patients. He gave so much to our community and I, among many, will miss him!
Dr Gerner was the best! While working in the lab, he came on the staff as our FIRST surgeon. I was a bit leary at first, but grew to love the guy. He always graciously offered to help with my car repairs and I would find his head under my car hood whenever he could find the time. He confided in me that he used to be a car mechnaic. Nice progression: car mechanic to surgeon!!!The Vail community was lucky to have had Dr Gerner at VVMC.
Dr Bob had one of the kindest hearts of any man (or Doctor) I ever met. His warm smile, c asual office ambiance (including the country music ! ;-) ) and professional expertise helped make my cancer therapy not so traumatic. He had a way of putting his patients at ease. I feel very priviledged to have been one of his patients. I am a happy & healthy breast cancer survivor because of him. He will missed by so many people, especially me.
Bob Gerner was a unique individual and a wonderful physician. He carried the entire surgical load at the VVMC for many years. I assisted Bob in surgery for several yers and I always remember his night time phone calls: "Hey, Gerry. Want to help with an acute belly?--- This one won't be a payer." That never mattered to Bob. I will miss our discussions about stocks, the Cowboys, and the Rockies. Thinking about Bob Gerner will always make me smile.
I stopped by almost everyday after lunch to see Dr. Gerner and Juanita. We would talk a lot about sports, but also about life in general. On days I wasn't able to stop by, they would call or leave a message. They would say, "We just wanted to make sure everthing was ok and you were allright. We didn't see you today and were wondering if you were ok." He took care of my wife, 4 children and myself. He was and will always continue to be a great doctor, a great man, but above all and most importantly one of my closest and deareast friends. His work was his life. Since we will never meet again this side of heaven, I look forward to seeing you again on the other side on that long and beautful shore. Good night my friend. We love and miss you sorely. I'm sorry to here about our loss of another Gerner. I'm Ernest's grandson Fred's son. I've met some of this side of the family, but it's been years. I would love to here from someone. May God Bless.Jason [email protected]
I will always remember Dr. Bob from my teen years as someone very special to admire and he always lived up to that admiration. He meant so much to my mother, 'Aunt Tot', who took such pride in all of his achievements. Our family is greatly saddened by his loss.
I worked with Dr. Gerner for 20 years at Vail Valley Medical Center. The care and compassion that Dr. Gerner displayed to his patient's was more than I have ever since before. He will truely be missed in the Vail Valley.
Dr. Gerner, I will always remember you as one of the most dedicated physicians I have ever worked with. You were a fixture here in Vail long before I arrived 24 years ago. You have been a caring and compassionate doctor to me and my husband, as well as a learned colleague. I will miss seeing you in your office. Godspeed.
I've worked with Dr.Gerner for over 20 years at 3 different mountain hospitals. He was one of the most caring and compassionate physicians I've ever met. I met him the day that our surgeon in Leadville was killed in a plane crash and he called immediately when he found out to see if we needed his help to care for the surgical patients that were in the hospital. I will never forget how Dr. Gerner provided care to his patients. He really cared about them and it showed. He will be missed by so many.
