Richard was born on August 26, 1934 to R. William and Vida Brown. He grew up in Wheeler, TX and then attended Oklahoma State University where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Following his graduation from OSU, Richard served for several years in the United States Air Force as a flight navigator. After faithfully serving his country he established residence in Oklahoma City where mutual friends set him up on a blind date with his future spouse, Anita Henry Brown. A month before their wedding, Richard lost his dad unexpectedly so the couple made their home in Wheeler, TX and Richard began a lifelong career in the cattle industry. Richard was a dedicated cattleman his entire life. He enjoyed working his land and interacting with others in the field. His expertise placed him on the Texas Cattle Feeders Board of Directors for many years. The other joy of his life was his family. Richard was a dedicated family man, never missing a football game or basketball game of his children Rich and Beth….and there were many! Later this same dedication moved to the activities of his grandchildren in Goldthwaite, TX. Richard was a kind, quiet and humble man, but those who knew him best were keenly aware of his wit and sense of humor. He was also a man of faith. He served in the Methodist church for years as the Treasurer. He was active in the community serving on the Wheeler ISD school board for 15 years, many of those in the role of President, and the Board of Directors of the First National Bank in Wheeler. In the late 70s Richard wanted to increase his ranching operation and did so by purchasing property in Hamilton County and near Goldthwaite, TX. Richard and Anita spent many years traveling back and forth between Goldthwaite and Wheeler. Later in life, they primarily resided in Goldthwaite where Richard actively participated in ranch activities with his son, Rich and grandson Cole. Richard lived an exemplary life on earth and is surely hearing “well done, good and faithful servant.”
Richard is preceded in death by his wife, Anita, parents R.William and Vida Brown and his sister Billie V. McClellan.
He leaves behind his children Rich Brown, wife Lori, of Goldthwaite and daughter Beth Helton, husband Dale of Decatur, TX, four grandchildren Cole Brown, Lauren, husband Shane Miosi, Rachel, husband Evan Villalobos and Macy Helton. Richard was a dedicated OSU alumnus, sending his children (and his money) there. He particularly enjoyed his experience as a member of Beta Theta Pi. He valued the Beta friendships throughout his lifetime and supported the principles of Beta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beta Theta Pi Building Corporation, P.O. Box 700508, Tulsa, OK 74170. Memorials may also be made to Wheeler Methodist Church, P.O. Box 89, Wheeler, TX 79096. Richard was also a supporter of the Tunnel to Tower Foundation - t2t.org
