Ray Alton Chambliss' Obituary
Ray Alton Chambliss, 92, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2025, in Claude, Texas.
Family-directed memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at South Georgia Baptist Church in Amarillo, with Rev. Mike Martin and Karen Wells officiating. Cremation and arrangements are under the care of Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.
Ray was born on March 9, 1933, in Matador, Texas, to Elijah Byrd and Florence Lillian Ingleburger Chambliss. He was raised in Matador and graduated from Matador High School. On May 7, 1977, he married Nila Joyce Hightower in Childress, Texas. Ray proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps.
Throughout his career, Ray worked as a manager in several lumber yards, earning respect for his dedication, integrity, and leadership. Beyond his work, he was deeply involved in his communities—serving with Big Brothers Big Sisters in Copperas Cove, as a member of the Rotary Club in Hereford, and as a charter member of Southern Hills Baptist Church in Copperas Cove. He was also a devoted member of South Georgia Baptist Church in Amarillo.
Ray will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his gentle kindness, and the love he shared so freely with family and friends. His life was marked by quiet strength, devotion, and service to others—a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Vernon, Hazel, Ella Mae, James, and Annie B.
He is survived by his wife, Nila Chambliss; his son, Ray Alton Chambliss; his daughter, Susan Chambliss Cusick and husband Michael; his stepdaughter, Rhonda Newhouse and husband Mike; his stepson, Brent Foard and wife Melissa; his grandchildren, Charity, Candace, Christian, Paul, Madison, Taylor, Courtney, Michael, Kegan, and Kolby; and 15 great-grandchildren.
