Olla “Peggie” DeBord was born August 23, 1904 in Sulphur Springs to John and Mildred Nelson Rogers. She departed this life on August 24, 2009 at the age of 105 years and 1 day. She was the second child of a family of eight children. At an early age she moved with her family to Commerce, Texas where she attended public school and two years of college at East Texas State College. In 1926 she moved to McKnight and began a teaching career. After teaching one year she moved on to Goldston and taught one year. Both schools were in Donley County. While teaching in McKnight she met M.C. “Slats” DeBord and they were married May 1, 1928 in Commerce, Texas. They made their home in the McKnight area where they raised their four children. She resumed her teaching career during World War II at Quail where she taught until her retirement in 1965. Peggie and Slats moved to Hedley, Texas in 1958, where she continued to make her home. She loved to play 42, a domino game, and was extremely hard to beat. She was an avid reader, enjoyed working crossword puzzles and being with family and friends.
