Myrtle Verden's Obituary
Ada Myrtle Gibson Verden, 97, a resident of Wheeler for 62 years and Angleton and Amarillo for six years, left this earth with her Lord Jesus on January 15, 2025. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Wheeler Methodist Church, with Rev. Leonard Gonzales officiating. Visitation will be Friday, January 24, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Robertson Funeral Directors.

Myrtle was born July 4, 1927, in Granbury to Finnis and Mary Johnson Gibson. She graduated from Lakeview High School in 1943. She worked for 10 years as a florist before she became a wife and mother. She married James Verden on March 7, 1953, in Memphis. They lived in Follett and Canadian prior to moving to Wheeler in 1956.
Myrtle was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Wheeler for 62 years. She served in various offices for the United Methodist Women, taught many of her children’s Sunday School classes, taught Vacation Bible School, and worked on numerous committees. She was often found in the church kitchen serving others.
Known for her chocolate chip cookies, Myrtle also sewed prom dresses for her daughters, Janice’s wedding dress and three-piece suits for Jim. She liked to embroidery, make flower arrangements, grow roses and blue bonnets, and work jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles.
She loved her family. She was a wonderful mother and her children’s first teacher and coach. She loved having family in her home, especially her grandchildren who called her Grandma. A favorite activity of the grands was playing in the mud at Grandma’s house. She loved to cheer for the Wheeler Mustangs, especially when her children were playing. She traveled many miles watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandson play sports. She was an avid Texas Tech Red Raider fan.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her 12 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her daughters Luinda Verden of Amarillo and Janice and Mike Christley of Angleton; son, Jim and Rosanna Verden of Aledo; grandchildren, Brooke Verden of Bullard, Mac Christley of Houston, Jami Christley and her fiancé Sean Welsh of Houston, and Zach and Tatianna Verden of Abilene; great-grandchildren, Kade Verden of Bullard, Emalin and Emerson Verden of Abilene; her sisters-in-law Sandy Pitcock of Fort Worth and Evelyn Verden of Haskell; numerous nieces and nephews; and adopted children, Von (42 partner) and Sindy Chapman of Wheeler and Lana Jackson of Amarillo.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be to Wheeler Methodist Church, P.O. Box 89, Wheeler, Texas 79096.
