Myrtle Stages was born on May 15, 1935, in Stillwell, Oklahoma, to Harrison and Maudie Brown. She later moved with her family to Kansas, where she graduated from Satanta High School. During her school years, she met the love of her life, John Stages.
Myrtle and John were united in marriage on November 29, 1951, in Clayton, New Mexico. In 1953, they made their home in Shamrock, Texas, where they lived until 1984. They then relocated to Rockport, Texas, before retiring and returning to Shamrock in 1993.
Together, Myrtle and John raised three children: John “Sonny,” Larry, and Jona.
Myrtle was a dedicated and hardworking woman. She began her career at the bra factory in McLean, Texas, and later served her community through her work in school cafeterias. She worked for 12 years at the Samnorwood School Cafeteria and an additional 9 years with the Rockport School Cafeteria system. During her time in Rockport, she served 7 years as the manager of the Live Oak Cafeteria.
In her retirement years, Myrtle found her greatest joy in her family. She cherished every moment spent keeping up with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always showing up to support and encourage them in all they did.
Myrtle was a proud member of the Cherokee Nation, the United Methodist Women, and a Lifetime Member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also actively involved in her community through organizations such as the Samnorwood Young Matrons, the Shamrock Genealogical Society, and her service on the Shamrock Pioneer West Museum Board.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Stages, on April 15, 1994; her oldest son, John “Sonny” Stages III; her grandson, Thomas John “Tommy” Meek; three brothers, Joe Harvey, Troy, and William Brown; and six sisters, Margaret Brown, Mary Higgins, Linda Hothouse, Carline Salsman, Connie Smith, and Maggie “Peggy” Sullins.
She is survived by a loving family, including her daughter-in-law, Connie Stages of Samnorwood; her son, Larry Stages and Sharon Holly of Shamrock; and her daughter, Jona Meek and husband Kevin of Briscoe. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Janna Smith and husband Trey of Wheeler; Ty Stages and wife Kammi of Marietta, Oklahoma; Sunni Jo Stages of Shamrock; Shantell Campbell and husband Wes of Texola, Oklahoma; Kandi Allen and husband Laramie of Shamrock; Katie Stages and fiancé Samuel Mandujario Jr. of Amarillo; and Ethan Stages of Amarillo.
Myrtle is further survived by numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Roy G. Brown of Stilwell, Oklahoma; three sisters, Opal King, Faye Buckner, and Haley Kay and husband Tracy, all of Stilwell, Oklahoma; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Shamrock Meals on Wheels or the Shamrock First Methodist Church.
