Lee Ora was quite the woman. She was my supervisor at the ECU snack bar. She made me laugh, kept my spirits up, hugged my child, & me. She gave me some of her strength on days that I was so tired. She also set me up with a blind date but we won’t talk about that. Rest In Peace, Lee Ora. I can still feel your arm around my shoulder & see your smile.
LeeOra was one of the most amazing women I’ve known. She had high standards for herself and all those she loved. She was fiercely proud of Sue, Ty & Kade, and would brag of their accomplishments, especially if she was sure they were NOT within earshot. She didn’t want anyone resting on their laurels, because she always recognized their potential to aim higher. She left a legacy of world champions, so she was doing something right. LeeOra also had a quirky sense of humor and it could catch you off guard when you least expected it. There was a mischievous twinkle in her eye that made me laugh, every time I saw it, because you knew something was coming next. You rarely had to guess what she was thinking because she would usually just say it. I learned to appreciate that kind of honest communication. As a mother, grandmother and neighbor, she showed her love through cooking. From mouthwatering peas and cornbread, roast, or her award winning canned tomatoes, she was an incredible cook. Her little apricot pies were infamous and it took me 8 years to pry the recipe out of her. She went through some tough times, but she was a survivor. Lee Ora was a strong independent woman before anyone ever heard of women’s lib. She taught me to be more fearless, forthright and act with confidence. She had been a hair dresser and was often called upon, to fix a deceased client’s hair in the morgue. I asked her if it was “creepy” and she patiently explained that it was actually a great honor. She said “I’m called upon, to be one of the last people on earth, to do something kind for that person”. That made me really stop and think. We should all look for more ways to show kindness, each and every day.
Thank you LeeOra for all that you taught us. Remembering you always, we will keep cheering on your world champions, for decades to come. Rest In Peace Lee Ora, we’ll take it from here.
