John Foy Young was born September 1, 1922 in Memphis, Texas to Gilbert and
Alice Grimsley Young. He passed away on December 16, 2017. Foy attended
school in Lakeview and graduated from Lakeview High School. After graduating
from high school he attended aircraft engineering school in Wichita Falls.
Foy married the love of his life, Johnnie Sue Byars, whom he met on the
baseball field. Foy’s team was playing a baseball game and was short one
player, so they asked Johnnie Sue, a young twelve year-old girl, to fill in. Years
later they were engaged to be married after Foy completed his aircraft training.
However, the attacks on Pearl Harbor took place and Foy was on alert to be
sent to war. He exchanged the engagement ring for a wedding ring and they
moved their wedding date up! They were married on December 20, 1941.
Shortly after that, he was drafted into the Army Air Corps where he was
stationed in several different states. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Other than his years in the service, Foy was a life-long resident of Hall County.
He had various jobs through the years including owning an aerial applicator
business where he had six spray planes. He also owned and operated Young’s
Farm Supply, where local farmers played many games of 42. Foy was most
known as being a farmer and rancher. He spent many hours checking cattle on
his horse, Chief. Foy was also the first farmer in this area to plant cotton on top
of the bed. He shared his love of fishing and hunting with his grandchildren. Foy
was a member of the Memphis Church of Christ and loved the Lord.
Foy was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Alice Young.
He is survived by his wife of almost 76 years, Johnnie Sue, and his two
daughters, Alice Kay Roden of Lubbock and Betty Ann Morris and husband,
Ronnie, of Bastrop, one brother Billy Ray Young of Amarillo. Foy had four
grandchildren, ZAnn Messer and husband Terry of Seymour, Ron Morris and
wife Crystal of College Station, Leigh Ann Hawthorne and husband Dan of
Memphis, and Michael Morris and wife Julie of Memphis, 7 great-grandchildren,
4 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
