Jewette Hayes was born September 30, 1921 in Valdosta, Georgia to Uluis and Eunice Everett. She spent her early childhood in Tifton, Georgia and moved to Miami, Florida where she later graduated from Miami High in 1941. In 1945, Jewette moved to Yuma, Arizona where she worked as a teletypist for the War Department. She was a classic example of the “Greatest Generation”, sacrificing and persevering through the Great Depression and World War II. She married Raymond Hayes in Yuma, AZ in 1945 after meeting him at a USO dance.
Soon after that, they moved back to Miami where their six children were born. In 1962, the family moved to a farm near Lela, TX where she and her husband continued to raise their children. They were so proud of her when in her 40’s she went back to school to become a nurse. Jewette worked as a LVN at Shamrock General Hospital for 36 years.
After the death of her husband of 52 years she moved from the farm to Shamrock. She is fondly remembered as an avid reader, a sports fan, especially of her Miami Dolphins, and a great cook. Jewette was a godly role model who adored her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
“Her children arise and call her blessed”. Proverbs 31:28.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1997; a daughter, Sandra Feil; two brothers and two sisters.
