Howard Fred Lohberger was born on October 20, 1943 in Wheeler, TX and died on February 2, 2011 at the age of 61 years, 3 months, and 13 days.
Howard grew up at Allison, TX on his parents (Verne and Susie Lohberger’s)family farm. There he learned to work and play: driving trucks and tractors; hunting the occasional rattlesnake (much to his mother’s dismay); honing his considerable athletic skills with brothers and friends; and getting farming and ranching into his system so thoroughly that he never fully recovered!-he continued to be involved in one or both for the rest of his life, as long as he was able. He enjoyed music and was a big Elvis Presley fan.
He graduated from Allison High School in 1968 and went on to attend college at SWOSU at Weatherford and Panhandle State College in Goodwell, OK. In his high school days, Howard had the natural athlete’s eye-hand coordination to a rare degree; so much so, said his sister Suzanne, that the vendors at the Oklahoma State Fair would make him leave because he had won so many stuffed animals!
One of those teddy bears must have taken over his heart, because that’s exactly what Howard became around children. He dearly loved young children, and delighted in taking his own children with him when they were quite small, and then doing the same with his grandchildren as the next generation came along.
Howard’s generous nature was one of his main attributes. Even after marrying and moving to Sweetwater, OK he would still come back to help his dad at wheat harvest time. His generosity was extended to friends and family alike, as illustrated by the time his sister-in-law’s family rented generator lights from him for a family reunion, and he refused to give them a bill. He was preceded in death by his parents, Verne and Susie Lohberger, and one grandson, Jayse Cotey Lohberger.
He is survived by two sons: Eric Lohberger and wife Shelia of Sweetwater, OK., Justin Lohberger and wife Brandi of Sweetwater, OK., one daughter Dawn Case of Sweetwater, OK., Eight grandchildren, three brothers: Danny Lohberger and wife Sarah of Milpitas, CA, Joe Rucker of Allison, TX., Alton Lohberger and wife Ariel of Allison, TX., two sisters: Carolyn Morello of Cypress, CA., and Suzanne Lohberger of Allison, TX.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers memorial be sent to Zybach Cemetery Association 16220 FM 1046 Briscoe, TX 79011.
