Harry Jackson Garrison III was born on October 3, 1945 in Shamrock to Clare O’Gorman Garrison and H.J. “Jack” Garrison Jr. He passed away on December 11, 2017 after a courageous battle against kidney cancer. He graduated from Wheeler High School in 1964. Harry attended West Texas State University after high school but his time at West Texas was interrupted by the Vietnam War. He served as an artillery fire direction specialist in the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam and he received a Bronze Star and numerous other awards for gallantry. His time in the Army and his affiliation with the 1st Cavalry Division was a lifelong source of pride and friendships. After Vietnam, Harry returned home and finished his degree at West Texas State where he met and married Jan Smith Garrison in 1971. They made their home in Shamrock and were married for 46 years. Harry dedicated his life to mentoring, inspiring, and helping his children in any way he possibly could. He was a business owner and he operated Harry’s Gulf Service and H.J. Garrison Oil Company, a service station and fuel distributorship, with his father and brother for most of his life. He handed off the business to his sons in 2004, but in “retirement” Harry worked long, hard days to help his sons through good times and bad. Harry was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Shamrock and his faith was very important to him. He was a proud member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Catholic War Veterans, and Knights of Columbus
He is preceded in death by his parents Jack and Clare Garrison.
He is survived by his wife, Jan, his son Greg and wife Laura and grandsons Austin, Jack and Michael, his daughter Sherilyn and husband Chris and granddaughters Kendall and Kate, his son Paul and wife Marysa and grandsons Zane, Colt, and Grant. He is also survived by his brother Larry Garrison, sisters Kathleen Cross, Pat Grametbauer, and Pam Vogt His family will always remember a loving husband, father, and grandfather who gave generously of his time, laughed often, and never failed to let his family know that they were the most important thing in his life.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Shamrock or the Vietnam Veterans of America’s Agent Orange program which can be found at https://vva.org/what-we-do/outreach-programs/agent-orange/.
