Evelyn Schaffer's Obituary
Evelyn Schaffer stepped out of this life peacefully, surrounded by family on Wednesday, December 10, 2025 and walked into Heaven and the arms of her Savior.
Born on December 11, 1938 in Boydston, Donley County, Texas, Evelyn Cecilia Hermesmeyer was the third child of James William “Jim” Hermesmeyer and Emaline Elizabeth Lack. She grew up in Groom, Carson County, Texas and graduated from Groom High School. She married George Andrew Kuehler in 1958 in Groom and they made their home in Amarillo, Potter County, Texas. In 1959, their oldest son James Albin was born, followed by Keith Allen in 1961, David Lynn in 1962, George Robert in 1963, and Dale Wayne in 1964. She moved back to Groom in 1972 and worked with her mother at their dry goods store. The two of them were amazing seamstresses and altered and sewed clothes for the community for many years.
On February 4, 1978 in Gray County, Texas, she married the love of her life, David Leon “Bud” Schaffer and expanded her family of boys with Donnie Wayne, born 1958, Tony Lynn, born 1961 and Jerry Dee Schaffer, born 1963. Evelyn was very active in the Methodist Church of Groom where she began attending with her late husband Bud. Evelyn loved her huge family and the loud, story-telling, laughter-laden holidays when they gathered at her home. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed bringing delicious meals to family night at the church. Her rhubarb pie was a much loved favorite but you had to be fast if you wanted a slice! Her beautiful, homemade quilts, given to family for weddings and babies, were made with great love and care and are precious treasures that are cherished by each lucky recipient. Evelyn loved to sew, read, and garden. Her home grown jalapeños were made into delicious jelly and spicy hot sauce that were a favorite gift each Christmas.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her siblings Mary and James, parents Jim and Emaline Hermesmeyer, first husband George Kuehler, brother-in-law Ted Rush, husband Bud Schaffer, sons Bob Kuehler and Dale Kuehler, grandchildren Ema Elizabeth, Kendal Elizabeth, and Jimmy William.
