When I became the preaching minister of the College (now University) Church of Christ in Las Cruces, Don and Ginger and their small daughter Laurie (as I recall) had been there for a year or two (I arrived in June of 1966). He was the Director of the nearby and fairly new BIBLE CHAIR building. And preached in the interim until I came on board. We enjoyed knowing them, but lost track of them after he returned to preaching, this time at Hobbs, NM. Then in about 2012, while traveling and passing near Clarendon, we found them at home (next to his busy printing business). We had fun remembering people and events at Las Cruces. One that I have often share happened maybe 6 months into my ministry. The local Ministerial Association asked him to speak at the Methodist during the week before Easter. When that news got out, I received at my office a call from a female member (wife of a farmer) who was blazing hot about Don Stone setting such a bad example of getting cozy with the sectarians. She griped about his bad judgment in speaking in a Methodist church building, as though she would have only accepted it if he went there to ream them out for their ungodly rules and ways. She said, "Don is just a son of the devil for speaking down there." And I replied, "Well, sister, he asked me to go with him and that's what I am going to do." That really fried her bacon. She got louder and said, "Well, then, you're just another son of the devil yourself." After a few more minutes of her ranting and raving, I interrupted her and said, "Sister _______, from all you've said, don't you think you'd be happier as a member of ______ Church across town?" She paused for a few seconds, then regained her anger and loudly said, "I don't know for sure whether I'd be happier over there or not. But I'll tell you what I'm going to do, Stan. I'm going to stay right here in this congregation just so I can pester you." Bless her pea-pickin' heart, she was a woman of her word.
