Chester Rodgers' Obituary
Chester Rodgers, 92, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior May 3, 2024.
Services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 8, 2024 in the Memphis Church of Christ with Mark Lance, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Memphis.
Viewing will be held Tuesday with the family receiving friends for visitation from 5:30 - 7:30 PM at the funeral home.
Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Memphis.
Chester was born April 13, 1932 to H.H. and Jewel Rodgers at their homestead in Rotan, TX where he joined nine other siblings. When he was nine years old the family moved to Phoenix, AZ where he attended elementary school and high school. He worked at several jobs before trying his hand at becoming a professional long haul truck driver. This became his passion and he loved the open road.
He met the love of his life, Edith Murdock in Memphis, TX and they were married in August 1966. Chester and Edith had no children but all their nieces and nephews became surrogate children to them. The kids all loved “Uncle Chester” who was always a kid at heart himself! He was the “cool” and “goofy” uncle that everyone wanted to be around. Chester, always the prankster, delighted in making people laugh or scaring the bejeebers out of them! He was also quite the story teller.
In May 1981 Chester decided to change professions and he and Edith moved to Memphis, TX to oversee the Hall County Jail. They were jailers there until retiring in July 1995. Chester was also a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for Hall County from 1985 to 1995. After retirement from the jail, he and Edith bought a home in Memphis and took on various jobs to keep them busy between numerous road trips to visit family and friends.
Chester lost the love of his life, Edith, on 30 December 2014. Also preceding him in death were his loving parents H.H. and Jewel Rodgers, and siblings Verde Adkins, Alvin Rodgers, Edgar Rodgers, Dorothy White, Lawerence Rodgers, Raymond Rodgers, Iris Davis, Roy Rodgers and Fay Booth. He was the last of his generation. His nephews and nieces now take on the title of “the eldest generation” and each carries fond memories of their dear Uncle Chester and his generation!
Chester dearly loved God, the United States of America and his family. A real patriot! Chester was a member of the Memphis Church of Christ.
