Charlie C. "Blackie" Johnson, 88, of Memphis, Texas, passed away Monday, July 28, 2025, in Memphis. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at the Hedley Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Rowe Read Obituary
Blacky’s mom & dad were wonderful people. They had a ranch at Giles, TX. It had been a major shipping point from the Texas Panhandle. The cattle pens were still there in the 1960’s. I haven’t been there in many years, but it was located between Hedley and Memphis, TX. It is on the NE side of US highway 287. It can’t be seen from the highway.

Blackie (and Shirley) are wonderful people. They came looking for me and opened up their home to me when I had no where to go. I lived there many months. They treated me like a daughter. I am forever grateful!! He always had a smile on his face. I know Sis and I got in trouble a few times but I don't remember him ever being angry. Oh wait, yes I do. LOL WE GOT IN TROUBLE. We were not where we were supposed to be. hmmm.
He has such a Legacy in the Rodeo world and meant so much to many people. My Aunt Mary and Uncle Eddy Blacksher are just two of them. I was in that world for so many years and everyone knew who Blackie was and had great respect for him. Prayers for all of his family. I loved him and love all of you. Natalie Morris Holland
Blackie wouldn’t tell a whole lot about his escapades but if you could get Don Reeves to talking he would “tell all”! Don said he could hardly wait to get to school to find out what Blackie had planned for the day!😂🇺🇸

I remember when Charlie, Gladys, Blackie, Shirley and family would come over to the Mosses' (Walter H. and Willie Vera) for Christmas visits. Aunt Letha would play the piano and the Mosses would sing Gospel. Everyone would have a great visit that lasted all afternoon into the evening. The stories that were told about Aunt Letha, Blackie, and Uncle Don when they were kids growing up told me that Blackie was indeed a very colorful character. Mary Irene Moss
