Benjamin Jose Vallejos was born in Westin Colorado, on February 26, 1934 before the family made their home in Hayden Colorado. They lived on “the ranch’ as Ben called it, and he held that place closely to his heart for as long as he lived, often painting it or telling stories from his childhood there. In his older age, he mostly resided at his special home in Farley, New Mexico, that he lovingly built and added onto continuously. He made his final home in Howardwick, Texas, on his oldest daughter’s property in a house he once again made his own.
Benjamin served his country in the Korean War, where he once drove a landing boat during the Battle of Inchon. He often told of his involvement, and was very proud to be a United States Navy veteran. Benjamin was a coal miner off and on for 27 years, a hobby carpenter, and more importantly, a minister of the Gospel. After being born again into the family of God. Ben’s passion was sharing the Gospel and praying for his family to know Jesus.
Ben was very lucky to have loved and been loved twice in his life. In 1960, he met and married Matilda Rivas, and they began their family. Over the course of 16 years they would welcome six children, Laurie, Ben Jr., Dori, Mary, Elizabeth and Joseph. They were married for 36 years. In 2006, he met Selayne Tilson, his second chance at love and life. They were married for 11 yeas before Selayne went to Heaven. He often spoke of Selayne and how much he missed her and longed to see her again.
In his spare time, he loved gardening, making birdhouses, dancing to western music, a good cup of coffee, and being with his family. He would often just sit and watch his large family visit with a very content smile on his face. He loved being warm, even in the heat of summer, and one could often find him in a front of a fireplace on July 4th.
Benjamin was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Dolores Vallejos, his beloved brothers Hank, Bob, and Raymund, the mother of his children, Matilda Rivas, his wife, Selayne Tilson Vallejos, and his grandson, Skylar Benjamin Vallejos.
Benjamin is survived by a brother, Manuel Vallejos; two sisters, Josie Romero and Kathy Snyder; daughters Laurie Fanelli, and husband David, of Howardwick, Dori Baeza, and husband Robert, of Amarillo, Mary Garrett, and husband Stephen, of Amarillo, and Elizabeth Banbury, and husband Jay, of Waxachachie, Texas; sons Benjamin Vallejos Jr. and wife Tammy, of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Joseph Vallejos, and wife Jessica of Shamrock Texas; 27 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, special friend, Pastor Lazaro Garcia, and wife Maria, of Amarillo, and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives who will miss him always.
