Allie was born on April 1, 1932 in a dugout in Giagos, New Mexico, she was the youngest of 12 children born to her parents. She spent most of her formative years on the family farm near Grady, New Mexico. She met Norris L Hoyt in 1961 when she waited on him in the café in which she was working as a waitress. He left her a dime tip! They soon married and ran restaurants in Odessa, Bushland, Wellington and Amarillo. They eventually returned to Groom, Norris’s hometown, and made their life here.
Allie worked as a cook at The Grill in Groom on Old Route 66 for 30 years. She could still tell you how many of Groom’s residents liked their eggs prepared. She prided herself on making delicious donuts and pies and the best hamburger you ever put in your mouth. She did not stop cooking when she retired, just began to cook for a more selective group… her children, grandchildren and all their friends. She loved nothing better than to have 4 or 5 little girls in their pajamas sitting at her kitchen table while she made hotcakes. Allie was a grandmother to any child who would let her love them. Many children, not related in any way, still call her “Grandma” years after they were grown. She always had toys, dolls, puzzles, cards, trucks, and cars long after her own children and grandchildren outgrew them.
Allie loved to crochet and quilt and always had something in her hands to keep her busy. She loved animals and always spoiled her pets the same way she spoilt the children in her life… lavishly. In later years she helped out at the Groom News and loved driving around in her green golf cart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, all her siblings, and her son, Jim Burton.
She is survived by her husband, Norris Hoyt; daughter Donna Burton of Groom, son Roy Whittaker of San Angelo, grandchildren Melody and David Miller of Kuna, Idaho; April and Brandon Jones of Amarillo; great grandsons Taylor Jones of Amarillo; Jerome and Cedar Miller of Kuna Idaho and numerous other children that called her “Grandma”.
The family suggests memorials be made to the United Methodist Church of Groom, PO Box 489, Groom, TX. 79039 or to the City Park Playground Equipment Fund, c/o The City of Groom, PO Box 217, Groom, Texas.
