Alden LaRue Olson was born November 4, 1925 in Woods County, Oklahoma to Lewis and Ida Olson. He remained on the farm helping his father with the many duties of farm life until he was drafted into the Army. He received an eighth grade education at a local rural school located about a mile and half south of the home. On February 19, 1945 Alden entered the military service of the United States at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and received honorable discharge from the Army at Fort Sam Houston, Texas on December 18, 1946. He shipped overseas on the Ship named Seabarb. He served as a seaman on a Landing Craft LCM, and Landing Craft Tank Unit 1226 before transferring to Landing Craft Tank Unit 520 for eleven and a half months in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre, with various organizations, mostly with Company “A” 592nd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment. Alden received the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, Army of Occupation ribbon (Japan), One Overseas Service Bar and the Victory Ribbon during WWII. His rank was that of Technician Fifth Grade. One of Alden’s favorite treats was vinegar pie. Although his mother gave her recipe to his wife, Alden said his wife’s pies never tasted like his mother’s. Another favorite food was dried apricot pie. His sister Nena often made him an apricot pie when he made a visit. Alden was a master carpenter and worked on bridge construction before, and for the first few years after, his marriage to Leta Vern Gleason on December 28, 1954 at Enid, Garfield County, Oklahoma. In addition to bridge construction, Alden was involved in commercial and residential construction for several years. Alden and Leta traveled to all fifty states, Canada, Mexico, and several countries in Europe. Mostly, they enjoyed camping where they took long walks and enjoyed nature.
