She was born to C.I. and Leona Jewell Casteel in Severe County, Arkansas on April 7, 1922. The oldest of twelve children, her descended lineage spanned generations in her lifetime, as did her charming smile and warmth. Rose Lee met the love of her life, Lawrence Audrey “L.A.” Watson of Red River County, working in a cotton patch near Lake View, Texas. They were married in 1938 and later settled in the Martin community near Clarendon, where they lived for many years. She was a proud farmer, homemaker, and world class quilter with a deep affection for singing. Devoted to her lifelong faith, she was baptized at 19 in Deep Lake, Texas and remained a pillar in church communities throughout her life. She cheerfully led the congregation at Martin Baptist Church in singing for many years and led bible studies well into her later years. Of late, Rose Lee was an active member of the Community Fellowship Church in Clarendon and the Donley County Senior Citizens organization. Among the things she cherished in life were piano playing, Alan Jackson’s gospel records, wearing elegant and soft-brimmed rose red hats (her favorite color), and opening her home for family and friends to celebrate holidays. She frequently and generously offered her ever growing family with gifts of handmade quilts and homemade canned delights. When she was not occupied with her volunteerism and family life, she loved to take in the natural beauty of her garden as she pruned and cared for her plants, giving them safe harbor from the West Texas wind. Even late in life, Rose Lee could be found exercising body and mind with a smile. To her family, Rose Lee was a brilliant light of unconditional love and dedication. She selflessly poured herself into a life of hospitality and care for her family, community, and friends alike. Her life endeavors and challenges were all met with resilience and cheerfulness. Although mortal coil has been shed, her family will hold a wellspring of reminiscence and admiration for generations to come. Rose Lee left in her life’s wake an example of grace, elegance, hard work, and warm heartedness of which the world may take note and benefit. She was preceded in death by her parents;step-mother Vera Casteel; her brothers Jr., Dwane, Dale, and Jody; her sisters Vera Jean Casteel Stevens, Neita Casteel Draper, Allene Casteel, and Elizabeth Casteel Bohannon; her husband L.A.; her grandchildren Adenia Mills Baird, Terry Cole, and Karla Cole; her great grandchildren Cole Kedane, Adrian Mills; and great-great-grandchild Faith Sims. Survivors include her two daughters, Gay Cole and Doris Mills, both of Clarendon; two sons, Faylon Watson and Larry Watson, both of Clarendon; brother, Kenneth Casteel of Houston; her grandchildren Charles and Kent Mills, Annette Bragg, Carl Watson, Tim Cole, Shanna Cole Kadane, Regina Watson Moore, Janet Watson Brown, Renee Watson Allen, Oren Shields, Cael Shields, and Amy Shields. Also surviving are 22 nieces and nephews; 30 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; and a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Michael and Suzie Rhinehart for the great care given for the many years there, Kindred Hospice and the Kindred nurses that attended her, and the Memphis convalescent Center for care in her final days. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Donley County Senior Citizens Center, Community Fellowship Church, and Kindred Hospice.
