Richard Tunnell, 86, of Clarendon died Friday, December 18, 2020 in Amarillo. Cremation & arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon. No services are planned at this time. Richard was born January 17, 1934 in Briscoe County to Clyde and Agnes Swift Tunnell. At the age of five he began shinning shoes at the local barber shop on Saturdays. This turned out to be quite a lucrative business that he continued until the ripe old age of thirteen. Following high school graduation, Richard attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree and became a pharmacist. Within three months of college graduation, he was drafted and served from 1957-1959 in the United State Army. He worked as a pharmacist in the Army. In addition, he served three years active duty, three years reserve duty, and three years stand-by reserve duty. When he got out of the service, he and his brother and brother-in-law bought a drug store in Clarendon. After seventeen years he bought out his partners and become the sole owner of Tunnell Pharmacy. One of the perks of being a Tunnell Pharmacy customer was free coffee. He married Mabel Moore on June 3, 1977 in Amarillo. Richard was a Methodist. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mabel; a sister; a brother; and by a grandson. Survivors include a son, Kelly Tunnell and wife Vicky of Clarendon; a daughter, Ricci Tunnell of Plano; 2 sisters; 2 grandchildren; and by 6 great grandchildren.
